The Innenhafen in Duisburg is Europe's largest inland harbour. Built for industrial use in the late 19th century, it has recently been redeveloped. Five Boats, a waterside development of office and retail facilities refers to the distinctive shape of the five main office buildings. They share an underground car parking and services level that occupies the maximum useable area of the building's footprint. They are raised above a ground floor divided by courtyards, which are open to the Innenhafen promenade and provide sheltered areas of green space. The retail and gastro facilities have fully glazed facades, affording views across the harbour. A typical floor plan provides a service core, an entrance hall and office area. All office areas benefit from flexible layout space, accommodating open plan, cellular and kombi office configuration with views of the harbour and the old town. The buildings are linked via bridges to “monitors” providing conference facilities and kitchenettes with a view.
